Seriously. Have you right-clicked on the W-LAN icon and cilcked "Troubleshoot"? Carried out each single step as per instructions and received 84 important and 7 optional updates within 15 mins of completion of this workaround. Changed all the files to hidden, and Read-only.
Any suggestions of what I should do next would be tremendously appreciated. I too was frustrated with trying every possible fix I could find - all to no avail. You need to install all those drivers. When it does, follow the prompts.

Select the right one by typing that number. Finally, somebody who actually knows - this fix worked for me.
Great article, but critically, I left my machine on all night when the update did not happen for over 3 hours and… voila… all the updates were available to be installed

Although Windows 7 has its own memory-diagnostics program, I prefer the free Memtest86+, which you have to boot separately. This worked like a charm! Remember to restart your computer after installing each one even if not prompted to do so. Paul December 27, 2016 Reply After 2 moths of frustration I found and followed your advice steps 1 to 13 and Windows 7 Professional 64 bit windows update now works exceedingly Be sure to choose the correct version for your operating system and system type.Restart your PC.Run Windows Update again.This may take a couple of hours to complete!This should resolve most issues It's possible the first profile became corrupt. The free, demo version of Recover My Files will show you which files can be recovered (almost all of them, when I tested it) and even display their contents.
If all else fails, you may want to try contacting Microsoft for further assistance, but the steps in the article should get things working again.
